This factsheet provides an overview of BPA. BPA is one of the common endocrine-disrupting chemicals in our environment and causes an estrogen-like effect by binding to estrogen receptors in the body. At high doses in animal studies, the estrogen-like effect of BPA is equipotent to estrogen in its ability to activate cellular responses. There remains scientific debate on how this translates to the lower doses seen in humans.
