A recent study published in Communications Earth & Environment found that certain types of “forever chemicals” are present in Antarctic waters. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or “PFAs” are linked to cancers and other serious illnesses. Previous research suggested that PFAs were found in limited quantities in the Southern Ocean; however, these recent findings suggest that PFAs have traveled. Researchers suggest that oceans are now “major reservoirs” of PFAs, which can lead to negative effects on the Antarctic ecosystem. Read the full The Hill article here.
